Vaginal Bleeding Q & A

What is vaginal bleeding?

A normal menstrual cycle is generally between 24 and 38 days and lasts up to eight days. Dr. Renan characterizes abnormal vaginal bleeding as any bleeding that differs from your regular menstruation, or any significant changes to your period, such as:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Irregular periods
  • Periods that last longer than usual
  • Bleeding before puberty or after menopause

What causes vaginal bleeding?

In many cases, abnormal vaginal bleeding is the result of a hormone imbalance in teenagers and women nearing menopause.

There are several other factors that can cause abnormal vaginal bleeding, including:

  • Uterine fibroids or polyps
  • Hormone therapies
  • Thyroid condition
  • Miscarriage
  • Cancer

Abnormal bleeding during pregnancy can be normal or may indicate complications. If you experience abnormal bleeding during a pregnancy, notify Dr. Renan immediately.

Bleeding after menopause may be the result of hormone replacement therapy or other health complications.

How is abnormal bleeding diagnosed?

Dr. Renan discusses your symptoms and your normal menstrual cycle during your consultation. He performs a physical exam and may request blood tests to rule out other medical conditions.

Through blood tests, Dr. Renan checks your hormone levels and tests your blood counts to identify iron deficiencies. He may also take a closer look at your reproductive organs through imaging tests like:

  • Ultrasound
  • Hysteroscopy
  • MRI
  • CT scan

You may also need to track your normal period and note your symptoms for several months to help Dr. Renan identify abnormalities in your cycle.

What treatments are available for vaginal bleeding?

Once Dr. Renan determines the cause of your abnormal vaginal bleeding, he creates a customized treatment plan to control or stop bleeding that may include:

  • Medications
  • IUD or birth control pills
  • Hormone therapy
  • Dilation and curettage
  • Endometrial ablation
  • Uterine artery embolization
  • Hysterectomy

He discusses your treatment plan, including possible surgeries, for relieving your vaginal bleeding and discomfort. If you experience frequent heavy periods, Dr. Renan may also recommend iron supplements as part of your diet to prevent anemia from the loss of blood.
