Prenatal Care Q & A

What can I expect in prenatal care?

Prenatal care encompasses the services Dr. Renan provides to you before a pregnancy occurs. Early prenatal care is important for ensuring your body is ready for a healthy pregnancy.

During your initial visit, Dr. Renan provides you with vitamins and discusses in-depth the do’s and dont’s of pregnancy. He reviews your medical history to identify any potential diseases or medical complications that could interfere with a pregnancy and may also administer screening for specific genetic traits.

Once a pregnancy is confirmed, Dr. Renan monitors the development of your baby and requests routine tests that may include:

  • Ultrasounds
  • Blood work
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Baby’s heart rate monitoring
  • Diabetes checks

Dr. Renan also monitors your weight gain as the baby develops. He may order additional testing based on your medical history, your family history, and your age.

If you experience a miscarriage or have a history of miscarriages, Dr. Renan offers comprehensive treatment services for diagnosing underlying health problems. He provides high-quality care to guide you through a miscarriage and available options to help you achieve a healthy, viable pregnancy.

How often do I need to see the doctor?

After your initial visit, you can expect to see Dr. Renan once a month until you reach 28 weeks. From weeks 28 through 36, Dr. Renan suggests appointments twice a month to monitor your health and the development of your baby.

Once you reach week 36, you can expect to visit Dr. Renan once a week until you give birth.

What is a 4D ultrasound?

An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to view internal structures of the body. Ultrasounds don’t use radiation like X-rays. Instead, they capture images from sound waves that bounce back from internal objects.

During your pregnancy, Dr. Renan administers several 3D ultrasounds to monitor the growth and development of your baby during your routine prenatal care appointments.

Dr. Renan also offers advanced 4D ultrasound technology to complement ultrasound assessments that monitor your unborn baby’s growth. This technology offers better imaging of the fetus and even makes it possible to see your baby’s facial features in real time.

With a 4D ultrasound, Dr. Renan can assess the baby’s position and fetal behavior, including:

  • Breathing
  • Swallowing
  • Eye blinking
  • Grimacing

If Dr. Renan detects abnormalities, he creates a customized treatment plan for further testing and monitoring.
