Laparoscopy Q & A

What is laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure used for diagnostic or surgical purposes. Dr. Renan has extensive training in laparoscopic surgeries to treat conditions affecting the female reproductive organs.

Dr. Renan inserts a laparoscope instrument into one or more small incisions in the abdomen or vagina. The laparoscope is a long, thin tube that has a high-resolution camera and a light that enables Dr. Renan to see your internal organs during exploratory surgery or a surgical procedure.

Why is a laparoscopy performed?

Dr. Renan uses laparoscopy to diagnose problems in your reproductive organs. He may use laparoscopy to identify:

  • Fibroids
  • Cysts or tumors
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Organ abnormalities
  • Scar tissue
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Infertility

Dr. Renan may also perform a laparoscopic procedure to as an alternative to traditional surgery. He may suggest laparoscopy to:

  • Remove fibroids or scar tissue
  • Remove cysts or tumors
  • Perform an endometrial ablation
  • Perform a hysterectomy
  • Correct a prolapsed uterus
  • Treat incontinence

Dr. Renan discusses your medical history and your symptoms to determine if laparoscopy is the right course of treatment for you.

How is a laparoscopy performed?

Dr. Renan administers general anesthesia for your comfort. He then inserts a small catheter to collect urine during the procedure and uses a small needle to inflate your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas to separate your organs from the abdominal wall. Dr. Renan makes a small incision in your navel or vagina and inserts the laparoscope.

As Dr. Renan moves the laparoscope around, images from the attached camera are transmitted to a monitor to provide him with a close-up view of your reproductive organs. He performs the necessary procedure using the camera as guidance.

After the laparoscopy is complete, Dr. Renan closes your incision with stitches and bandages the surgical area. You remain in the office to recover until being discharged.

What are the benefits of laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery and is useful in treating several conditions.
