Your body is about to turn into a home for a growing baby. That baby is going to get everything it needs from you to grow and develop. But before you toss the birth control, you need to start getting your body healthy before you get pregnant.

Making good choices now not only helps you maintain a healthy weight, but also provides your body with the nutrients your baby needs right from the start. Taking good care of yourself may even improve your chances of getting pregnant.

Aim for a healthy weight

Being too thin or too heavy before you get pregnant affects your baby’s birth weight and may increase your risk of developing pregnancy-related illnesses. Women who are underweight at conception are more likely to have low-birthweight babies, even if they gain all the needed weight during the pregnancy. And women who are overweight are more likely to deliver large babies, and are at greater risk of developing gestational diabetes or preeclampsia.

There’s no special pre-pregnancy diet. You simply need to eat the same healthy foods you should be eating all the time, which gives your baby adequate nutrients right from conception.

Focus on folic acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin that plays an essential role in the synthesis of DNA. When women with poor intakes of folic acid get pregnant, they may be at an increased risk for having a baby with a neural tube defect, which is a malformation of the brain or spine. All women, whether trying to get pregnant or not, should aim to get 400 micrograms of folic acid daily.

Filling your diet with the right foods not only makes your body ready for the baby, but may also help you get pregnant. According to researchers at Harvard, making certain food choices may increase your chances of getting pregnant.

Get physical

You not only need to get physical in the bedroom, but outside of it, too. Being more active and physically fit before you become pregnant may reduce complications during pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or high blood pressure. You don’t need to be able to run a marathon, just aim for 30 minutes of planned exercise most days of the week. Walking is a perfectly good form of exercise, and something you can easily continue once you get pregnant.


For bone health and muscle strength, a little weight training is good, too. Try to work out all the major muscle groups twice a week using body resistance exercises, free weights, or resistance bands. Yoga also makes a good body resistance workout.
