10 Tips for Managing Morning Sickness

While morning sickness is typically gone for most women by the third or fourth month of   pregnancy, here are 10 helpful tips from Dr. Renan to use in the interim, to help reduce the impact of morning sickness on your life.

Tip 1:

Make sure you have either some dry toast or soda crackers on your nightstand. Then, before you get up and out of bed each morning, slowly and carefully (to avoid choking) snack on a few bites of either one. Let a few minutes pass before getting up and moving around.

Tip 2:

If you need to get up during the night to urinate, have a light snack to avoid waking up with an empty stomach.

Tip 3:

Instead of large meals, eat small snacks more frequently -- maybe every two hours -- throughout the day. Smaller meals are easier on your digestive system.

Tip 4:

Stay away from strong odors that make you feel sick to your stomach.

Tip 5:

It’s important to stay well hydrated. Make sure you drink smaller amounts of fluids often and throughout the day, rather than downing large amounts at one time.

Tip 6:

When you feel nauseated, stick to low-fat, bland foods -- such as lean proteins and complex carbohydrates -- which are easier on the tummy. Try these:

Stay away from high-fat foods and spicy foods, as these are harder to digest and can add to your discomfort.

Tip 7:

Try foods and beverages made with ginger, which can soothe your stomach. Try ginger tea, ginger ale, or ginger-based crackers or candies. You can even brew your own ginger tea using fresh ginger root from your local supermarket.

Tip 8:

Stay away from smoke and fumes. Don’t smoke or allow yourself to be exposed to second-hand smoke of any kind.

Tip 9:

Check with Dr. Renan about whether you might benefit from taking extra vitamin B6. While B6 should be in your prenatal multivitamin, some women can benefit from taking more to help reduce their symptoms of morning sickness. Always talk with Dr. Renan before taking any new pills or supplements of any kind.

You can also increase your intake of B6-containing foods such as whole grains, beans, peas, and nuts.

Tip 10:

Make sure you get plenty of sleep and find ways to minimize stress in your life. A lack of sleep and feeling anxious and stressed, can make your morning sickness symptoms worse.
